Anaheim Ducks Embrace New Broadcast Strategy to Enhance Fan Accessibility
In a strategic pivot aimed at maximizing accessibility and fan engagement, the Anaheim Ducks are transitioning their local game broadcasts to a blend of direct-to-consumer streaming and traditional local broadcasts. This move is structured to ensure no cost to the viewers, broadening the reach of the Ducks’ games within their TV market.
Over-the-Air and Streaming Options
Starting next season, an impressive 65 Ducks games will be available on an over-the-air channel in Los Angeles, giving fans a variety of ways to catch the action. Channel 13 will handle these broadcasts, ensuring that the excitement of live hockey remains within arm's reach for numerous households in the region. Every game will also be regionally streamed on the Victory+ streaming service, a new platform providing free, ad-supported content. Fans can look forward to downloading the Victory+ app on their smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones beginning in September.
"We are so pleased to announce that fans in our entire television market, via stream or traditional television (cable or over-the-air) will see locally broadcast games free of charge," said Ducks president Aaron Teats. With accessibility at the forefront, this initiative is designed to connect with the fan base more effectively.
Departure from Diamond Sports Group
The transition comes after the expiration of the Ducks’ contract with Diamond Sports Group at the end of the 2023-24 season. Diamond Sports Group, mired in bankruptcy proceedings in Texas, had been the Ducks' broadcaster. The Ducks' shift to a more flexible and accessible arrangement marks a significant organizational milestone. Their regional territory encompasses Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, as well as Hawaii.
New Partnerships and Future Plans
The Ducks have joined forces with A Parent Media to orchestrate this new broadcasting arrangement. Jason Walsh, the chief operating officer for A Parent Media, noted, “The Ducks are already a significant content coordinator and have a team president with a broadcasting background.” This collaboration underlines the Ducks' commitment to leveraging expertise for a seamless transition.
In addition to accommodating local fans, the Ducks' move aligns with broader trends in sports broadcasting. The Florida Panthers, for instance, are set to move their local broadcasts to Scripps Sports, while the Dallas Stars will also stream their games regionally on Victory+. Amid these transitions, Diamond Sports Group continues to retain broadcasting rights for eight NHL teams during the 2024-25 season and maintains agreements with the Los Angeles Angels (MLB) and the LA Clippers (NBA).
Continuity in Commentary
Amid the changes, stability will be maintained in the commentary booth. Brian Hayward and John Ahlers, familiar voices for Ducks fans, will continue to provide their expert analysis and engaging play-by-play commentary. Their presence ensures continuity and comfort for viewers as they transition to new platforms.
Enhancing Fan Engagement
The Ducks' initiative underscores a strategic priority: enhancing fan engagement and accessibility. As Aaron Teats articulated, “It is a significant organizational priority to connect Ducks fans with our entire market and for every fan in our region to have the opportunity to watch Ducks games without cost across multiple, accessible platforms.” This approach aligns with the growing demand for flexible viewing options in the digital age.
With the upcoming season promising increased accessibility and free viewing options, the Anaheim Ducks are not just adapting to changing times; they are setting a precedent in the NHL. By catering to diverse viewing preferences and ensuring that cost is not a barrier, the Ducks are fostering a more inclusive fan experience.
As this new era of broadcasting dawns, Ducks fans can look forward to enjoying their favorite team’s games like never before, whether streamed on Victory+ or broadcast over-the-air, creating a broader and more engaged community of hockey enthusiasts.
