Vic Fangio Backs Bryce Huff Despite Early Struggles

Amid the Philadelphia Eagles' early-season defensive struggles, Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio has reaffirmed his confidence in Bryce Huff, cementing his position as a starter on the unit. Fangio's belief in Huff remains strong, despite the defensive end's modest production in the opening games. Huff signed a lucrative three-year, $51 million contract this offseason, setting high expectations for his performance.

"He's still going to be the starter. But we're mixing those guys in, as I know you know, and we'll continue to do that," Fangio commented on Huff's status. The defensive end has managed only two pressures in 59 snaps over the first two games, translating to a pressure rate of 6.7%. Huff has yet to record a sack or quarterback hit, results that have drawn attention and scrutiny.

Fangio recognized the areas for improvement but remains steadfast in his belief in Huff's potential. "He's still learning how to play the total game and not just rush situations. But he's working hard at it, and we're going to stick with him," Fangio affirmed.

Meanwhile, Nolan Smith has shown flashes of effectiveness, recording three pressures with a pressure rate of 13.6% across the same span. Like Huff, Smith has not yet registered a sack or quarterback hit. Fangio noted Smith's development positively, saying, "I think Nolan has come a ways since his rookie year. I think he's playing better on the edge than he was last year, all around."

The Eagles have struggled significantly against the run, ranking 31st in the NFL in yards per carry allowed (6.4) and 29th in 10+ yard rushes allowed (11). Fangio acknowledged the need for improvement in this area, stating, "I think when you talk production, correct me if I'm wrong, but you're talking sacks and pressures and stuff, and until we do a better job of playing the run, those aren't coming. That's for sure. We all have to do a better job, starting with me, of playing the run better."

Integrating Experience and Potential

Fangio's strategy leverages a mix of seasoned veterans and promising rookies to solidify the Eagles' defensive front. Jalyx Hunt, a rookie third-round pick, has quickly bought into this approach and remains optimistic about the team's trajectory despite the early setbacks. "It's everybody's second game of the season. We're learning to gel. I'm not worried about it at all. You see spurts of it in moments, so once we get to the point where that's the whole game, I think we're going to be fine," Hunt stated confidently.

Hunt expressed a mature perspective on his role within the team, indicating his willingness to bide his time and learn from established players. "One thing I would hate to do is to wish my time to come faster then I'm not where I need to be. But my time will come and when I have the opportunity, I feel like I'm going to rise to the occasion," he shared. Hunt speaks highly of the mentorship he's receiving: "I'm working hard every day, getting extra time in with the coaches and what not, BG [Brandon Graham], Bryce [Huff], anybody I have access to."

Focusing on Fundamentals

Fangio, known for his methodical and fundamentals-driven approach, aims to address the Eagles' defensive shortcomings through consistent performance and technique refinement. His insistence on blending experience with potential reflects a strategic vision aimed at long-term development and immediate impact.

The Philadelphia Eagles face an uphill battle in refining their defensive play, but Fangio's faith in his players' ability to adapt and improve may be the key to turning their season around. With veterans guiding the rookies and everyone buying into the focus on fundamentals, the groundwork for a cohesive and effective defensive unit is being laid.

In the end, Fangio's emphasis on fundamentals and team cohesion could indeed foster a resilient defensive unit. This blend of seasoned leadership and youthful potential embodies the Eagles' strategy for the season, as they seek to overcome early struggles and carve out a formidable defense.
