Dre'Mont Jones' Impactful Season with Seattle Seahawks
During the last offseason, the Seattle Seahawks made one of the most significant free-agent acquisitions in the franchise's history by signing Dre'Mont Jones to a lucrative three-year, $51.53 million deal. This strategic move aimed to bolster the team's defensive line with Jones' notable versatility and defensive prowess.
Demonstrating his skills throughout the 2023 season, Jones showcased his adaptability by transitioning between different roles on the defensive line. In the first half of the season, he primarily played as a defensive tackle. However, after Leonard Williams signed mid-season in October, Jones moved to the defensive end position, reflecting the Seahawks' ability to leverage his multifaceted defensive capabilities.
Over the final eight games of the season, Jones played 302 snaps at defensive end and 61 at tackle, reaching career-highs with 49 tackles and 12 quarterback hits. Nevertheless, amid these impressive statistics, he recorded a career-low of 4.5 sacks, an interesting contrast in an otherwise standout season.
Nolan Teasley, a voice within the organization, emphasized the critical role of Jones' versatility, stating, "One thing that I would emphasize is versatility. I know a player that we're really excited about, that they're excited about moving around, is Dre'Mont Jones because of his ability off the edge, his ability to rush anywhere from the three-technique to the six, maybe even out to the nine." To further his preparation and adaptability, Jones reported to minicamp weighing between 265-270 pounds, a drop from his listed 281 pounds. Notably, he participated in position drills alongside the outside linebackers, indicating an effort to refine his technique and maximize his impact in various roles on the field.
Jones' ability to play different positions was clear during various defensive formations, where he lined up both on the edge opposite Williams and inside next to him in a nickel package. This versatility made the Seahawks' defense less predictable and more challenging for opposing offenses to study and counter.
As Mike Macdonald explained, "He can do a lot of things. We've talked about it, but we're really excited about Dre'Mont. When you have guys that can do multiple things, play different gaps in the run game and rush at different levels in the pass game and you can have more big guys, it just opens up more personnel groups, more looks you can generate."
The Seahawks' strategic handling of Jones' contract further highlighted his importance to the team. By converting $9.875 million of Jones's $11 million base salary for 2024 into a signing bonus, Seattle freed up $7.4 million in salary cap space without adding new money to the contract. This financial maneuver ensured the team had the flexibility to further strengthen the roster while retaining a pivotal player in Jones.
Leonard Williams mirrored this sentiment on the tactical advantages Jones provided: "It makes it harder for the offense to study us knowing that they may see Dre'Mont at a five-technique on film, and then when we line up and play against them, he's probably going to be playing zero- or three-technique."
