Commanders Training Camp: Key Performances and Player Insights
As the Washington Commanders’ training camp continues to develop, players are diligently honing their skills, particularly focusing on red-zone situations. Tuesday marked the sixth practice session, a significant day of progress, being the third with fans in attendance, and notably, the second session conducted in full pads.
One standout in camp has been quarterback Jayden Daniels, who is currently splitting first-team reps with veteran Marcus Mariota. Daniels showcased his arm strength and accuracy during 11-on-11 drills, making a deep connection with Olamide Zaccheaus up the right sideline. He also demonstrated poise by hitting Jahan Dotson and delivering a precise pass to Terry McLaurin on opposite sides of the field.
An especially memorable moment for Daniels came during the final team session, where he connected with Dotson once more and completed a touchdown pass to veteran tight end Zach Ertz. However, it wasn't all smooth sailing for Daniels, as he encountered a bungled handoff with Jeremy McNichols and experienced a streak of missed throws.
On the offensive line, Brandon Coleman has been a versatile asset, taking snaps with both the first and second teams at left and right tackle. His adaptability was on display as he faced off against seasoned veterans like Dorance Armstrong Jr., Dante Fowler Jr., and Clelin Ferrell. Coleman has been meticulous in refining his technique throughout camp. "There’s always like three points in my brain that I'm telling myself in the next period if I didn't do it well. Like today, it was my hands were pretty bad in the first period. I was like, 'Work on my hands, work on my balance, keep my chest up,’" Coleman shared, reflecting on his continuous efforts to improve.
Defensive efforts have also been at the forefront, with Mike Sainristil standing out as a constant presence on the starting defense. Sainristil's relentlessness and commitment to excellence are evident in his play style. "Part of it is just my play style. I'm a guy that's gonna go hard until the whistle's blown. And then the second part of it is just getting myself to make that second nature for me, so that when it comes game time, I don’t even have to think about stuff like that," Sainristil explained.
Additionally, newcomer Jer'Zhan Newton had his first experience with first-team reps this camp, making a mark by forcing McNichols to cut back during a play. K.J. Henry and Javontae Jean-Baptiste contributed significantly as well, proving their presence and making noteworthy plays throughout practice sessions.
On the receiving end, Dotson has been one of the camp's most consistent performers, playing with increasing confidence and speed. “I feel like I'm just getting more comfortable, and that's enabling me to play faster and faster. That's been a big emphasis for me,” Dotson remarked, highlighting his focus and improvement.
Special teams saw an impressive showing from kicker Ramiz Ahmed. During Tuesday’s team drills, Ahmed displayed remarkable accuracy, not missing a single field goal attempt, and successfully hitting from distances as far as 51 yards with ample distance to spare.
In summary, the Commanders’ training camp has been a mix of standout performances, areas needing improvement, and constant development. As players push themselves and refine their skills, they are setting the groundwork for what promises to be an invigorating season.
