CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers are staying in Charlotte for the foreseeable future. This decision comes in the wake of a landmark approval by the Charlotte City Council for a significant stadium renovation plan.
City Council Approves Stadium Renovation Plan
In a decisive move ensuring the team's presence in the city for the next 20 years, the council voted on Monday night to support an $800 million renovation of the Bank of America Stadium. The plan features a substantial financial commitment from the city, amounting to $650 million, while Panthers owner David Tepper will provide the remaining $150 million upfront.
Tepper, who has already invested more than $117 million in stadium enhancements, has also pledged to manage potential cost overages for capital improvements, estimated at approximately $421 million.
Funding and Council Decision
The city's contribution will be sourced from existing hospitality and tourism tax revenues. The vote saw a majority of 7-3 in favor of the plan, highlighting both support and skepticism among council members. Despite the Panthers' recent struggles on the field since Tepper purchased the team in 2018—amassing a record of 31-68 and experiencing six head coaches—the council was resolute in its decision not to risk the franchise’s potential relocation.
Even with the team finishing at a league-worst 2-15 last season, the council's decision underscores a commitment to keeping the franchise in Charlotte through 2045. These renovations include upgraded video and audio systems, modernized infrastructure, redesigned concourses, and unique social areas with skyline views. Significantly, the south lawn pavilion area will be transformed into a community gathering spot and outdoor classroom, enhancing its utility beyond game days.

Councilman Malcolm Graham endorsed the initiative, calling it "a forward-thinking initiative that aligns with Charlotte's future." Conversely, Councilmember Tiawana Brown voiced a note of caution by saying, "It sounds real good until we get Mr. Tepper angry, and then he might throw something at the city council."
Former Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart added an optimistic perspective, urging the community to "embrace this opportunity to let the Queen City shine brighter even more so than it did in 2015."
