Atlanta Hawks Bolster Roster with Trade for David Roddy
In the latest move of their ongoing roster reshuffle, the Atlanta Hawks have acquired forward David Roddy from the Phoenix Suns. In exchange, the Suns will receive E.J. Liddell, marking the young forward's second team switch in less than a month.
Roddy's Arrival
David Roddy, the 23rd overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, is set to bring a versatile skill set to the Hawks. Originally drafted by Philadelphia, Roddy's draft rights were later acquired by Memphis, where he began his rookie season before splitting time with Phoenix. During the 2023-24 season, Roddy started 13 of 65 games, averaging 6.5 points and 3.2 rebounds per game and scoring in double figures in 18 contests. Notably, he matched his career high with 10 rebounds in two separate games. When given a starting role, Roddy's numbers significantly increased to an average of 11.1 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
Roddy also impressed during the summer league, where he started in five games for the Phoenix team, averaging 14.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. His solid performance on both ends of the court might provide the Hawks with the depth and dynamism they seek to enhance their roster.
Liddell’s Short Stint with Atlanta
On the other side of the trade, E.J. Liddell's time with the Hawks was brief yet eventful. Liddell was initially acquired from Ohio State as part of a multi-player trade that sent Dejounte Murray to New Orleans on July 6. This deal not only brought Liddell to Atlanta but also included two first-round draft picks. Originally a second-round pick by the New Orleans Pelicans in 2022, Liddell participated in just eight games with the Hawks, seeing limited playing time.
During his stint with the Hawks, Liddell demonstrated his potential in the summer league, averaging 7.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Despite his promising showing, the Hawks opted to move in a different direction, dealing Liddell to acquire the more experienced Roddy.
