Walker Buehler Returns to the Injured List

Walker Buehler Returns to the Injured List

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Walker Buehler has returned to the injured list due to right hip inflammation. This unfortunate development comes as Buehler continues to struggle to regain his form following significant injuries. Buehler missed most of the 2022 season and the entirety of 2023 after a second Tommy John surgery.

Injury-Plagued Seasons

From 2018 to 2021, Buehler was a key figure in the Dodgers’ rotation, winning 39 games and maintaining an ERA that never climbed above 3.44. His performance during these years made him an invaluable asset to the team. However, his comeback journey has been challenging, and the 2024 season has yet to see him return to his prior form.

Since May 8, 2024, Buehler has a 1-4 record with a 5.84 ERA across eight starts. His most recent start in Colorado was particularly troublesome, as he struggled significantly, taking a line drive off the hip but opting to stay in the game. Unfortunately, he surrendered seven runs on seven hits, including two home runs.

Hip Inflammation Causes Concern

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed that Buehler’s hip had been sore for several starts. Roberts expressed hope that placing Buehler on the injured list would allow the pitcher to regroup both physically and mentally. “I think [he's] a little bit sort of finding himself again. I think he's still in search mode. So, as he's getting back to health, I think for the mind and some clarity, I think this will be a good thing,” Roberts said.

Buehler, reflecting on his situation, said, "It sucks to feel kind of invaluable, or like you're hampering your team. At the end of the day, we really like our team and want to be ready for the end of the year. And I'm going to do whatever I need to do to feel like I can help our team at the end of the year, and do everything in my power to be valuable enough to be on those rosters."

Bobby Miller Activated

In a corresponding move, the Dodgers have activated pitcher Bobby Miller, who had not pitched since April 10 due to right shoulder inflammation. In his second major league season, Miller has shown great promise. This year, he holds a 1-1 record with a 5.40 ERA in three starts. Miller's impressive rookie year in 2023 has created high expectations for his return to the mound.

Miller’s activation is critical for the Dodgers, who have had to manage an array of injuries within their pitching staff. His return adds considerable depth to the team’s rotation, and the Dodgers hope he can help stabilize the pitching lineup amid Buehler’s absence.

Looking Forward

Buehler’s career statistics remain commendable despite his recent struggles. Over seven seasons, he has amassed a 47-20 record and a 3.17 ERA. These numbers reflect his resilience and dedication, qualities that the Dodgers organization and fans alike have come to admire. The hope remains that rest and careful management will allow Buehler to return to his top form.

The Dodgers have demonstrated admirable depth and flexibility in the face of inevitable injuries that occur in Major League Baseball. With Buehler stepping back, all eyes will now turn to how Bobby Miller steps up to cover the loss. His return represents an opportunity for the team to maintain the strength of their pitching lineup while Buehler focuses on his recovery.

Injury setbacks are an unfortunate reality for any athlete, and for Buehler, this latest stint on the injured list is another chapter in his journey. However, his determination to return and contribute to the team’s success remains steadfast. The Dodgers, backed by their deep roster and managerial acumen, will look to navigate these challenges as they continue their quest for success in the 2024 season.
